INMAS, CHATTOGRAM AT A GLANCE

Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Chattogram is a Bangladesh Government Organization of Ministry of Science & Technology under Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC).

Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, Chattogram, is governed and run by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Formerly known as the Atomic Energy Medical Services, which was inaugurated on May 1, 1972 by the then Minister of Health and Family Planning, Mr. Abdul Malek Ukil, under the leadership and direct guidance of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Chittagong Medical College Hospital premises in Chittagong, this institute is the second largest medical service institution of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.

Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, Chattogram is one of the oldest Nuclear Medicine Institute in Bangladesh and was established in 1970. With the vision to render specialized medical services to the people using nuclear technology for peaceful uses of atomic energy to achieve self-reliance for overall socio-economic development.

Nuclear medicine is a significant branch of medical science. Here medical services are provided by the doctors, scientists, engineers, technicians, skilled officers and trained employees with the help of modern equipments using radioactive materials. We have six medical service departments and a education, training and research unit in the institute:

(1) Gamma camera and fusion SPECT-CT scan,

(2) Thyroid department and radioiodine therapy unit.

(3) In vitro and hormone lab.

(4) Clinical ultrasound.

(5) CT scan.

(6) Bone mineral densitometry, tissue and bone grafts.

(7) Education, Training and Research Unit.

Broader Chittagong Division (Districts - Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Chandupar, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari) has a population of over 4 crores. For this massive population, the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Chittagong, as a trusted institution, has been providing training in medical services and medical (health) human resource development for over 50 years with an honor. Moreover, undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University receive pragmatic training at this Institute every year.

Further note, the Institute is working on a project to build a 6-storied PET-CT and Cyclotron building on the ground floor with a 40 feet underground cyclotron bunker. At present, in Cancer Treatment Molecular Imaging PET-CT Scan is an ultra-essential modality. In the next few days, more advanced medical services will be provided to the cancer patients with the help of SPECT-CT machines in this very institute.

This institute is presently functioning with facilities like Dual Head & Single Head SPECT Gamma Camera, CT Scanner, SPECT-CT Fusion image, Thyroid Division & Radio-iodine Therapy Unit, Thyroid Scanner, Ultrasonogram & Colour Doppler, Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD), In-Vitro Laboratory for Radioimmunoassay (RIA), Chemiluminescence Immunoassay (CLIA) and Radiation sterilized amnion membrane and Tissue & bone allografts.

Our primary goal is to provide excellent clinical Nuclear Medicine & Ultrasound services to our patients and our referring clinicians, and our secondary goal is to provide a good learning environment. A complementary goal is to provide the opportunity to participate in investigative endeavors for those who are inclined. You are integral to the success of both primary goals.

The Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, Chattogram is located in the Chittagong Medical College Hospital Campus, which is most popularly  known as “Red Building-লাল বিল্ডিং” in Chattogram.

কেন্দ্রের আনুষ্ঠানিক উদ্বোধন : ১৯৭২ সালের ১লা মে তদানীন্তন আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের স্বাস্থ্য ও পরিবার পরিকল্পনা মন্ত্রী জনাব আব্দুল মালেক উকিল প্রধান অতিথি হিসাবে কেন্দ্রটি উদ্বোধন করেন । অনুষ্ঠানে সভাপতিত্ব করেন তৎকালীন পরমাণু শক্তি ও সুপারকো প্রতিষ্ঠানের বিশেষ দায়িত্ব প্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা, বিশিষ্ট পরমাণু বিজ্ঞানী ডঃ আনোয়ার হোসেন। কেন্দ্রের প্রথম পরিচালক ডাঃ কামালউদ্দিন আহমদ অনুষ্ঠানে স্বাগত ভাষণ দেন। কেন্দ্রটি স্থাপনের ব্যাপারে উদার সাহায্য ও সহযোগিতা দানের জন্য সভাপতির ভাষণে ডঃ আনোয়ার হোসেন স্বাস্থ্য মন্ত্রণালয় এবং চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল কলেজ ও হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষের প্রতি গভীর কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন। উদ্বোধন উপলক্ষে ২রা মে, ১৯৭২ কেন্দ্রের মিলনায়তনে ঢাকা আণবিক শক্তি কেন্দ্রের রেডিওআইসোটোপ স্কুল কর্তৃক চট্টগ্রামে অবস্থিত বিভিন্ন প্রতিষ্ঠানের ডাক্তারদের জন্য পাঁচ সপ্তাহের একটি প্রশিক্ষণ কোর্সের উদ্বোধন করা হয়।
